Managing the Intersections: Functions and Tiers

Billy Ray Taylor

Director of Manufacturing of  Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company

The success of a manufacturing operation depends on its ability to convert its strategy into results. So why do operations fail to execute their organizational strategies? Because often, team members working at the lower levels don’t know what they own inside the strategy. Success is less about innovative management practices and more about process discipline and alignment of functions and tiers. Managing the “intersections” where strategic elements overlap ensures strong linkages between, customer satisfaction, quality, productivity, and profitability.

The organization's business strategy must flow through the alignment of Functions and Tiers, with alignment from the C-Suite to the manufacturing shop floor, moving beyond an environment where managers and continuous improvement professionals are the primary process improvement drivers to an environment where problems are raised and solved by the teams closest to the work required to meet customer demand and fulfill the value proposition. When people know which parts of the company strategy they have personal responsibility for, they can then own the results, thus enabling the company to succeed. Effectively transforming strategies into favorable outcomes.
