Description

The world is almost 20 months into what has arguably been the biggest distraction to mankind since the 2nd World War, and weariness and fatigue has spread like the virus itself. EH&S professionals rose to the occasion to prevent transmission in the workplace during the pandemic phase of this outbreak. Looking ahead to when we move into a more endemic phase globally, how do we sustain our efforts? As EH&S professionals, we know that safety and injuries follow the complacency continuum. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that people behave the same way when faced with serious health threats as they often do with known safety risks. The increased waves of infection were not unpredictable but lack of consistency and/or clarity of messaging from government and media, as well as the democratizing of information through social media, made complacency difficult to combat and had unnecessary deadly consequences. The pandemic is also shifting expectations of the labor force, creating a different set of concerns for employers in terms of organizational and operational resilience. This keynote session will provide a retrospective on the pandemic to date thought the lens of a multinational and multi-occupancy organization. It will also address some key considerations as to the path forward in the near-term and how the promise of technology may enable improved responses to outbreaks in the future.
